The Iron Triangle of Parenting

Inspired by Dylan Field episode

Dylan Field explains the project management triangle: quality, features, deadline - pick two. Every parenting day faces the same three-way trade-off.

Dylan Field teaches his team about the iron triangle of project management: quality, features, timeline. Pick two. The triangle is iron.

Every day with your kid is this exact triangle. Quality time, activities, reasonable timeline - pick two. You want genuine connection while hitting the library, the park, AND the grocery store? You're getting home at 8 PM and nobody's eaten dinner. You want quality time on a Tuesday? Cut literally everything else. You want to do multiple activities? You're going to have extremely meaningful conversations like "stop licking the cart" and "we don't scream in Trader Joe's."

The mistake is thinking tonight's different. You're doing the full bedtime routine AND cleaning the kitchen AND getting them asleep by 7:30. The triangle doesn't care about your optimism. The triangle is iron.

So you choose. Quality bedtime or clean kitchen. Connection or efficiency. Tomorrow the triangle resets and you can lie to yourself again.
