Map the Problem Before the Solution

Inspired by Teresa Torres episode

Teresa Torres' Opportunity Solution Trees: understand WHY something's broken before you fix it. Like why they won't eat vegetables.

Teresa Torres says stay in the problem space with Opportunity Solution Trees. Don't jump to solutions. Map what you're actually solving first.

Your kid refuses vegetables. You're ready to weaponize ranch dressing and make airplane noises. But wait - what's the actual problem here? Texture? Color? The broccoli reminds them of trees and they're having an existential crisis about deforestation?

Maybe they're not hungry because they ate seventeen crackers while you were on that Zoom call.

The solution changes completely based on which problem you're solving. Ranch dressing doesn't fix "I watched you murder these innocent trees." And airplane noises definitely don't address the cracker situation.

Map the problem tree first. The answer's hiding in there somewhere, probably next to the seventeen cracker wrappers.
