The Low Heart Rate Principle

Inspired by Sam Lessin episode

Sam Lessin's advice for venture capital parties applies perfectly to kids meeting new people: come in calm, not desperate.

Sam Lessin says etiquette is showing up with a low heart rate. Walk into the Kleiner Perkins party vibrating like you're on espresso and Adderall? Everyone scatters. Desperation has a smell.

Your kid enters a playgroup. They're moving at hummingbird velocity, screaming about Pokémon, grabbing toys like they're on Supermarket Sweep. The other kids form a protective circle and pretend blocks are suddenly fascinating. It's not rejection—it's self-preservation.

Or birthday parties. Your child corners one soul and delivers a TED talk about dinosaurs without pausing for oxygen. That kid is calculating escape routes involving the ball pit and fire exit.

You try explaining: take a breath, watch first, join what's happening instead of demanding everyone pivot to your energy. They look at you like you've suggested quantum physics. "But I'm EXCITED."

Yeah, kid. So is every desperate founder at a networking event. They're also going home alone with their pitch deck.
