Avoid the Build Trap

Inspired by Melissa Perri episode

Melissa Perri on the build trap: staying busy instead of focusing on outcomes. Are you doing activities or actually solving problems?

Melissa Perri talks about the build trap - when you ship features without knowing if they actually solve problems. You just keep building, measuring activity, feeling productive.

There's a parenting version. Your kid won't sleep. So you buy a baby monitor. Then a sleep sack. White noise machine. Blackout curtains. A second white noise machine because maybe the problem is you only had one white noise machine.

You're accumulating solutions to a problem you never actually defined. The output is a nursery that looks like a Best Buy. The outcome you wanted was the kid sleeps through the night.

They still don't sleep. But you have a closet full of gear and the satisfied feeling of someone who did *something*. That's the build trap. You're shipping features to a customer who can't tell you what they want and probably just needs you to stop trying so hard.

Focus on the outcome, not the output. Or don't, and enjoy your collection of twelve different swaddles.
