Coach in the Moment

Inspired by Marty Cagan episode

Marty Cagan on coaching in the moment rather than directing every decision. Teach while they're trying, not after they've failed.

Marty Cagan says coach in the moment when the teachable moment arrives. Your kid just grabbed a toy from another kid at the playground. You could file this away for "bedtime talk" or you could do it right now while they're still holding the stolen goods.

The moment is the lesson. Later, they're watching Bluey and eating crackers. They don't remember the toy incident. They remember that Bluey's dad is somehow both a dog and the world's most patient being.

You crouch down. "I see you wanted that truck. Taking it made that kid cry. Let's give it back together." It's awkward. The other parent is watching. You're sweating. But this is it. This is when their brain is actually recording.

Save it for later and you're just talking to yourself while they nod and plan their next heist.
