Default Yourself into Good Habits

Inspired by Kristen Berman episode

Kristen Berman's behavioral science truth: goals don't change behavior, systems do. Same with getting your toddler to brush their teeth.

Kristen Berman says goals don't change behavior, systems do. You need to redesign the environment. Which sounds sophisticated until you realize you're literally outsmarting a two-year-old with a toothbrush.

Want your kid to brush their teeth? Don't ask. Don't negotiate. Don't explain cavities like you're pitching to investors. You build a system: toothbrush lives by the sink, brushing happens after bath, same stupid song every night, zero exceptions.

The toddler defaults into good habits because you removed every decision point. They can't forget the toothbrush if it's already in their hand. They can't negotiate timing if bath always means teeth.

You've essentially turned yourself into their autopilot. You're not parenting, you're designing their user experience so they can't screw it up. The system is doing all the work while you stand there humming the Elmo song for the nine hundredth time, which is either brilliant or deeply depressing.
