Parenting wisdom for product managers, powered by Lenny's Podcast

One Team, One Thing

Inspired by Geoff Charles episode

Ramp's 'one team, one thing' focus built Amex competitors in months—your family needs the same ruthless prioritization.

You know how in product development they say "one team, one thing"? Like, everyone focuses on the same priority so you don't end up with seventeen half-finished projects nobody cares about?

Yeah, that's parenting.

Except your team keeps voting to focus on different things every forty-five seconds. One kid needs help with homework RIGHT NOW while the other one has decided this exact moment is when they need to discuss why clouds don't fall. Meanwhile, you're just trying to remember if anyone ate a vegetable today.

And here's the thing about "one priority at a time" - it works great until someone starts crying. Then your whole roadmap is just "stop the crying." That's it. That's the sprint.

The standup is everyone yelling their blockers at once, and you're the product manager nobody listens to because they've already moved on to the next emergency you didn't see coming.

Focus? Sure. One thing at a time. Just pick which fire to put out first.
