Being Strategic Is Simple (Not Easy)
Inspired by Anneka Gupta episode
Anneka Gupta's definition of strategic—explaining the 'why' simply—is exactly what your toddler needs when you say no.
When people say they want someone strategic, Anneka Gupta says they really mean someone who can articulate a compelling and simple why behind the decisions. Not complicated. Just clear.
You say 'no' to your toddler maybe seventeen times before lunch. They hear the word. They don't hear why. Because you stopped giving the why around 'no' number four, when you realized you were too tired to live.
Turns out 'no' without the why just sounds like you're being mean for fun. Which, to be fair, you are a little bit. But also: "No climbing that, you'll break your face." "No cookies, we're eating real food in eight minutes." They still don't accept it, but now they can't say they don't understand it.
Being strategic isn't complex frameworks. It's just explaining why this and not that. Why now and not later. Same energy as justifying a product roadmap, except your stakeholder is three feet tall and covered in yogurt.
