Ask Why They Spilled the Milk
Inspired by Crystal W episode
Crystal W: Insights require the 'why' not just the 'what.' Your kid spilled milk. That's the what. Why did they do it? That's the insight.
Crystal says if you can't convince people who care about you to use your product, you're missing the why. Cool. Now explain why your kid just dumped their entire cup of water on the floor while making direct eye contact.
Was it a statement? A science experiment? A declaration of war? You're standing there with a soggy sock thinking "but WHAT happened" when the real question is WHY it happened.
Were they done drinking? Testing fluid dynamics? Expressing their feelings about the organic snack you just offered? The why determines whether you hand them a towel, redirect them to the bathtub, or accept that sometimes the why is just chaos wearing footie pajamas.
Product analytics without the why is just data. Parenting without the why is just constantly asking "why would you DO that" while they're already doing the next thing.
