Different and Better
Inspired by Ayo Omojola episode
Ayo Omojola on Cash App's edge: being different isn't enough, being better isn't enough - you need both.
Look, your kid's weird. Mine too. We celebrate that now—"Oh, he's so unique!" Meanwhile he's eating glue. But here's what nobody tells you: being weird without being good at anythingmakes you unemployable.
You can't build a life on being "different." That's not a career, that's a character trait. You'rea novelty act. "Hey everyone, watch this guy do math backwards!" Cool. He's still failing algebra.
Same problem if you'rechasing "better." You're in a speed contest with seven billion other people trying to be better at the exact same things. Good luck outrunning that.
The magic trick? Different AND better. Your kid's not great at soccer? Stop. Find what they ARE weird about, then find where that weirdness wins. They're obsessively organized? They're better at systems than kids twice their age. They're socially anxious? They listen better, read people better.
Don't make them better at math. Make them better at what their difference is good for. That's the game. Different alone isnoise. Better alone is a treadmill. Different AND better? That's the whole career.
